The Wilmington Symphonic Winds invites you to be a part of our 10th Season! With autumn nearing and the days growing shorter, we encourage you to find a way to illuminate your path. Our offering to you is NIGHT LIGHT – a musical excursion that celebrates the spooky season and presents works that creatively play off of our concert title.
NIGHT LIGHT imagines a scene involving a lone passenger on a deserted runaway train. Tip-toeing through the darkened dining car, the passenger experiences. Haunted Objects by John Mackey. The rider’s oil lamp begins to dim, leaving nothing but flashes of Rail Lights by Jennifer Higdon as the train speeds down the historic tracks. At the end of the dining car, an apparition of a jazz combo performs music from a Tango Club by Roberto Molinelli, featuring saxophone soloist Gabriel Sánchez Porras.
As the traveler continues her exploration down the ornate corridors of the train, she becomes cloaked in feelings of calmness and hope. At this moment, the passenger envisions the journeys of good angels Into the Silent Land by Steve Danyew, lulling her to sleep. Before long, she is awoken by a book falling from its shelf. It opens to the story of the Zoroastrian Goddess of the Night, Anahita, driving her chariot westward, fleeing from the rising sun. Intrigued by the story, the passenger looks out a window and is convinced she caught a glimpse of Anahita’s chariot being pulled by three monstrous horses – the Night Mares by Roshanne Etezady.
As the nighttime journey comes to an end, the train approaches Urban Light by James M. David. The piece is inspired by a Californian art fixture of historic streetlamps that remain bright In Storm and Sunshine by JC Heed. The Wilmington Symphonic Winds appreciates our audience more than we can express with words. Please come IN COSTUME and let us share our appreciation for you and the whole family with our performance of NIGHT LIGHT.
